The RAPS Cat Sanctuary is the forever home to more than 400 cats.

It was not a purpose-built facility, and it has grown somewhat haphazardly, as the cat population has increased year after year. As a result, much of the facility is old or inadequate.

At some point in the future, we will hope to purchase land and construct a purpose-built Sanctuary. At present, though, this foundational piece of our organization needs significant upgrades.

At the top of our list are new water heaters, furnaces, electrical panels and cables and other basic utilities and appliances. We need to repair floors and ceilings, improve drainage on-site, reinforce perimeter fences and gates and replace planters. We also need new kennels and cages, improved ventilation and a renewed isolation and quarantine area. Actually, it might be easier to list the things that do not require upgrading or replacement.

The RAPS Cat Sanctuary is home to almost 500 unadoptable cats. We have special facilities for cats with feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukemia. We have many cats with diabetes and other chronic but manageable conditions. Similarly, we have many cats with a whole range of behavioural issues. We have cats who are incontinent or who cannot control their bowels. Others have habits that will never make them welcome residents in a family home. These animals have come to us because, in so many other jurisdictions, they would have been euthanized.

We believe all of these cats have a right to live happily until their natural end. This is why the RAPS Cat Sanctuary was constructed in the first place and why it has gained so much public support over the years.
